Round the Island Yacht Race

This event is an amazing one to watch, especially from Ventnor as the yachts pass here very close to land. Get an amazing view from your balcony or sipping wine at a seafront pub! The boats will be passing all day.

The annual JPMorgan Asset Management Round the Island Race, organised by the Island Sailing Club, is one of the most popular fixtures on the Solent racing calendar. Competitors come from Europe and the USA, as well as all over the UK, to follow the 50 mile course round the Isle of Wight.

Starting on the famous Royal Yacht Squadron line in Cowes, the fleet races westabout, to The Needles, round St Catherine's Point and Bembridge Ledge buoy back into the Solent. Spectators can find many vantage points, both on the mainland and Isle of Wight, to watch the race progress.

Over 60 prizes are awarded for the event and every boat completing the race receives a memento of the occasion.

Whether you compete regularly or are new to the sport, you will enjoy superb racing in some of the country's best sailing waters. Whilst the fastest multihull record stands at just over three hours, the bulk of the fleet crosses the line during the late afternoon or early evening and it is often the smaller craft that carry off the top prizes!

If you are a newcomer to the event the "First Timer's Guide" has more information and advice. Plus, of course, the staff at the Island Sailing Club will be happy to answer your questions – email rir@islandsc.org.uk or call 01983 296621.

Full details are published in the Notice of Race, Safety Booklet and Sailing Instructions which will be included on this website as soon as they are available.

Isle of Wight Festival

In the music festival calendar, early June is now very much associated with the Isle of Wight Festival and 2008 will be no exception. Last year’s event had a line-up that included Coldplay, Foo Fighters and Prodigy. Previous years have seen top names such as REM, The Who, Faithless, Morrissey, Roxy Music, Snow Patrol and Embrace. But, it's more than just great, live music: the laid-back vibe (which the Island's famous for), the beautiful setting and the feeling of connecting with past festival history, all conspire to create a unique festival experience. Ask any of the 50,000 people who attended and they'll tell you the same.

Bestival - Winner of the best medium size festival award for 2005, 2006, 2007!

Organised by Radio One DJ Rob Da Bank, this three-day boutique alternative music event in the leafy setting of Robin Hill Country Park is the best way to round off the summer festival season.

Last year’s headliners included the Pet Shop Boys and Scissor Sisters, but elsewhere there was lots of leftfield dance, electronica, folk, ambient, pop and much more, all done with a fancy-dressed, twentysomething silliness of spirit.

When asked “What’s the best Saturday night out you’ve ever had?” Sarah Cox, presenter of Radio 1 weekend show replied “At Bestival on the Isle of Wight….it was a really small festival, the Magic Numbers were playing…It was a really lovely vibe.”
